Bright December Antidote

Well, news from the sick bay. I am feeling better. However, that doesn't mean Alice and I went anywhere today. Oh, no. We waved good bye to the keeper early as she headed off to a meeting with two very lovely women who wanted to talk about Exodus and how they are studying together and sharing their lives as they study. The keeper said it is quite a story of how they are both finding freedom through that book. Quite a selling point for the program called SALT!

The keeper also had a meeting on Capitol Hill and afterwards, headed to the Volunteer Park Flower Conservatory. There she hung out with chrysanthemums, orchids, and carnivorous plants like the Venus Fly Trap and the Pitcher Plant. Do you know that the Venus Fly Plants' leaves only have about three good fly catches in them? After three, they start to wither and die. She was fascinated by the rattlesnake plant. The keeper loves the conservatory because it smells so earthy and steamy and she said someday she would like to have a little greenhouse. Perhaps we could also live out there.

She also went to checkout the koi and duck pond. An older gentleman was feeding them all bread and even the koi were all but jumping up and begging. She said they were as big as we are. She like the pinto one best. It looked like a cow, she said.

She did end up at the Cathedral for a rehearsal for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but didn't want to go in until she could gaze at the breath stealing sunset over the Bay. We agreed after seeing the photos, it was pretty awesome.

We are becoming more and more concerned about the level of violence in the world. The shootings of police officers in Lakewood, the announcement about 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, the gang slaying by the Cathedral, and on and on. Have we become so used to it all that we would rather focus on Tiger Woods' problems rather than the slow cooking stew of resentment and low grade anger which is poisoning our society? The brightness of this December day helped us sharpen our thoughts about this. No pet tv on a day as beautiful as this!
