Neither Silver Nor Gold

Valentines Day is not a  big thing at the cottage, even for the felines. We think the keeper is a bit jaded. But she says it is too hard of a day for too many people, many of whom she works with, helping them heal painfully broken hearts. She says few people win on this day, and they are the jewelers and the florists and the other purveyors of that hope which can really not be purchased.

But today, we caught her in a less jaded moment. The mail came, carrying a battered, lumpy envelope from the Tacoma Detention Center. It was from the young man she has worked with for the last six years and whom she has been accompanying through his two months in detention. On a crumpled piece of paper was a thank you to her for having believed in him and a wish for a Happy Valentine's Day.  He enclosed a rosary he had made as a small token of gratitude and promised many prayers in the future.

Our feline intuition tells that this meant the world to her.
