Rest in Peace, Dear Cecil

On the way home from the Rite of Election the keeper drove slowly to ACCES emergency hospital where they were holding Cecil's remains in a casket shaped box. When she brought the box in and told me it was my friend, I didn't believe her because it didn't smell like him and no familiar greeting emerged out of the box. But when I looked inside, my feline intuition was confirmed; I had sensed we had said our last good bye in life last Tuesday night. I have sensed his spirit hovering near me these last days, and was hoping he would come back home, but now I know for sure. He's home, but alive in a new way.

It was pouring down rain, sheets of it. I wondered if the keeper would bury him in this weather.  But she told me that this was Cecil's favorite weather, and reminded me of how much he liked to come inside dripping wet and wait for her to chase him with a towel and rub him dry. So, we went ahead with the service.  I watched from the window perch. She wrapped him in a favorite blanket, tucked in his favorite mice, sprinkled him with the catnip he loved to roll in.  She included my picture. Then she gently placed the box bearing his name in the fleshly dug grave, and covering it with rich soil and lots of flowers--pansies and primroses, crocus and little jonquils, hellebores.  He is right under my window perch so we can keep an eye on each other and the hummingbirds and all the sparrows (and any other trespassing cats and raccoons).
In fact during the service the birds made quite a commotion, and the hummingbirds kept buzzing the keeper, and it wasn't about the food.  The feeders were full. It was too wet to light candles, but he isn't going anywhere, so maybe tomorrow.
There were prayers and calls from our friends, across town, across the country, and across the Pond. We even received sympathy cards. We felt very supported. Thanks to all.

This is the birds-eye view of Kittyrood.

Rite of Election Enchiladas

The keeper left me this morning and eventually landed at the Cathedral for the Spanish Rite of Election. Unlike the other Rites of Election, the one in Spanish always has a great meal following the event.  Today it was enchiladas, rice , and beans, I think she will have this for supper as well.

Luna Bella

We have no words for the beautiful moon this eve.

Resurrection Steals In

So, the keeper came home tonight

and dug a new grave in Kittyrood.
I watched her. But Cecil wasn't there.

There was only the daphne surrounding us with sweetness and other flowers which had bloomed while we weren't looking.
I understand she will bring Cecil home tomorrow and we'll have a private burial service in the later afternoon. It will be hard to lay our good friend to rest. We have flowers and candles and his favorite blanket and toys, as well as a new grave marker.

Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down

The season of Lent started with ashes and rent hearts.
The keeper and I are grateful for her friends who were so thoughtful and gracious to us after Cecil's passing.

Fare Thee Well, Sweet Friend

Lord Cecil

2000 - 2014

In the early hours, before the dawn, the keeper returned to the Animal ICU.
She had made a difficult decision, to set our beloved Cecil free from the pain and weakness. They couldn't not stabilize him, and the cancerous tumors had also moved to his lymph glands.
So, around two am with a wonderful doctor,  she held Cecil on her lap and sent him over the rainbow bridge.  He was set free on such a wild and stormy night. As the keeper and I begin this time of bright sadness, we hold the treasured memories of such a faithful, peaceful companion who brought such life to us for the past four years.
Rest and play, sweet prince! We were so lucky to have you in our lives!

Cecil in Hospital

Tonight we were going to celebrate Mardi Gras.
It didn't quite work put that way. When the keeper got home she discovered what I already knew.
Cecil was dragging. He wouldn't drink. He wouldn't eat. He would walk a little and howl. Then he would lie down.  She knew something was wrong, so kindly she fed me and rushed him to the kitty ER. She just got home, but not with Cecil. He has to stay in the ICU because his BP is very low and although his kidneys are okay, he may have other issues. The vet already called to tell us there is a mass on his spleen. We don't know if he will make it through the night.  We are sad here, but don't want to see our wonderful friend suffer.
