They have been in a full blown restoration and cleaning of the cathedral stone,
Cleaning off millennia of soot and soil from the walls, thousands of carved figures.
However, the edges of the pillars and piers will not be restored.  they have been rubbbed and marked bu thousands of pilgrims sitting on their ledges to rest.

They also had to stop cleaning when they found layers of bright paint.                                                    which had been applied to the pillars and piers which must have made for a very festive
